TRICARE is the Uniformed Services health care program for active duty service members, retired service members, National Guard and Reserve members, Medal of Honor recipients, family members, survivors, and eligible former spouses. TRICARE integrates the health care resources of the military health system – military hospitals and clinics – with a network of civilian health care professionals, organizations, pharmacies and suppliers to improve, protect, maintain and restore the health of their assignees. TRICARE offers a wide variety of health plans, dental programs, and pharmacy benefits to eligible beneficiaries.

TRICARE is available worldwide. There are three TRICARE regions in the United States – TRICARE North, TRICARE South, and TRICARE West – and one overseas region consisting of three regions – TRICARE Eurasia-Africa, TRICARE Latin America and Canada, and TRICARE Pacific . Your TRICARE benefits are the same no matter where you live, but each area has different customer service contacts. TRICARE works with civilian regional contractors to administer TRICARE health benefits in four regions. Health Net Federal Services, LLC administers benefits in the Northern Region; Humana remains an advantage in the Southern Military Region. UnitedHealthcare operates military and veterans services in the Western Region. SOS International Government Services Company handles foreign interests. Your Regional Contractor is your main source of information and help about your TRICARE benefits. Each regional contractor maintains a website and a toll-free customer service call center to help you answer your questions and concerns about issues such as eligibility, referrals, pre-approval, claims , appeal and fraud. TRICARE dental and pharmacy benefits are administered by specialized contractors. You can visit for more information. For more information about overseas benefits visit

Because the TRICARE site is a general information-only site – open to anyone with Internet access – registrations and any other actions that require access to your personal information are done through secure TRICARE partner sites. These websites require a secure login and are operated by the Department of Defense, or Department of Defense, medical, dental, and pharmacy contractors who administer TRICARE benefits. You can use partner sites to access your information and complete many secure online services. However, each site may have different login requirements. In many cases, to log in, you need: a common access card, or CAC; Defense Finance and Accounting Service, or DFAS, myPay Personal Identification Number or PIN; Or DoD Self Service Login, or DS Login Why not Single Sign On? TRICARE is administered by the Department of Defense and civilian contractors, many of whom have their own websites and electronic systems. Although you may need to access several different websites for self-service options, these resources provide a path to access them all.

The good news is that all the links to manage your TRICARE information and enrollments are accessible on the TRICARE website through the “I Want…” section on the front page of the TRICARE website, so you can manage your benefits at home or on the TRICARE website. Safe for TRICARE partners. The “I Want…” section connects you to public, secure websites where you can: Book appointments Find a doctor View referrals and previous licenses Change your previous one care provider, enroll in a PCM, purchase a prescription file management plan, or check a TRICARE claim These options can be checked along with many others because the website is -optimized for mobile devices. 8

Let’s look at one of the most important steps you need to take, which is to enter or change registrations. Start by selecting “Sign up or buy a plan” from the “I want to…” menu.

After you are selected, you can choose from TRICARE program options that are right for you or your family. Here we will learn how to enroll in a program like TRICARE Prime, which is required for active duty service members and can be used by others who may qualify. 10

Before starting the TRICARE Prime enrollment process, first find out if you live in a Prime or PSA service area by checking your zip code. A PSA is a geographic area, usually near a military hospital or clinic where TRICARE Prime services are provided. If you live in a PSA, choose PCM. If there is no military PCM, your PCM may be with a civilian TRICARE network provider at a military hospital, clinic, or PSA. If you don’t live in a PSA, select “Plan Finder” to learn more about your TRICARE options.

There are three ways to enroll in TRICARE Prime: Online: Your service personnel office, not TRICARE, determines your TRICARE eligibility. TRICARE Prime enrollment is done online through the Department of Defense’s website called Beneficiary Web Enrollment, or BWE. The BWE website securely links your personal information to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, a global database of service members and dependents eligible for military benefits. To register with BWE, you must have a CAC, DFAS myPay PIN or DS login. We’ll cover these sign-in methods later in this summary. Phone: Contact your regional contractor. Mail: Download the TRICARE Prime Primary Care Manager (PCM) Change of Enrollment, Cancellation, and Cancellation form, DD Form 2876, at this link and mail the form to your regional contractor.

The BWE website, a secure, accessible portal, allows eligible TRICARE beneficiaries in the United States to enroll or disenroll in TRICARE Prime Options or TRICARE Young Adult and select or change PCMs, as well as enroll in TRICARE Dental Options. Beneficiaries can also use BWE to update their DEERS contact information. The important thing to remember is that before you can access anything on BWE, you must log in. If you need a demo of using this site, select “BWE Demo” at the bottom of the home page.

To access the many secure self-service options available at BWE, you must log in: DS login, available to spouses and other beneficiaries age 18 and over; CAC is maintained by all DoD soldiers and civilians; Or your DFAS myPay Personal Identification Number (PIN), which provides access to your payment information and can be used if you don’t have a CAC A DS login, which is especially useful if your family members need access to their personal health information and important TRICARE letters. On the login page, log in using your DS login, CAC or DFAS myPay PIN. If you need help, select Help Center at the top of the BWE login page.

This slide shows the available login options depending on the beneficiary category. Service members can use any of three options including CAC, DFAS myPay PIN or DS login. Retired service members can usually use their DFAS myPay Personal Identification Number (PIN) or log into DS. A DS login is generally required to access other eligible family members, including spouses, surviving spouses, and children 18 years of age or older. DS login provides access to service members, retired service members, and other eligible family members. Note: The US Coast Guard, U.S. Public Health Service and members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration DFAS is free and does not have a DFAS myPay PIN.
