Pumgi Sylvester, Humana Military Health System manager, supports management at Bain-Jones Army Community Hospital. The main difference between basic and optional is flexibility and out-of-pocket costs, he said.

“TRICARE Prime requires a referral from your primary care provider, no opt-out,” he said. “Patients remain with the Prime Minister in the primary care military medical facility. With Choice, the patient has more flexibility to choose from TRICARE authorized providers in the community. The open season gives recipients a choice’.

Tri Care Eligibility

Silvest said it’s important to do your research and make an informed decision about the plan that will work best.

“It is important that eligible beneficiaries consider their options during the open season based on their health care needs for the coming year,” he said. “You will think about what benefits you need and what you are willing to pay out of pocket to help you make the best decision for you.”

TRICARE offers dental and vision coverage based on who you are, your age, and your TRICARE plan. During the open season, TRICARE recipients may also be eligible for the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program administered by the Office of Personnel Management. Eligibility depends on beneficiary status and requires enrollment in a TRICARE health plan. Visit www.benefeds.com to check eligibility, compare FEDVIP plans and rates, enroll in a plan and more.

According to Health.mil, retired service members and their families are eligible for TRICARE Choice for Prime in both vision and dental plans. Active duty family members are only eligible for the vision plan.

In addition to the open season, Sylvester emphasized that on Dec. 15, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club pharmacies will no longer be part of the TRICARE network.

“Recipients who use it for prescriptions want to start making decisions about where they want to transfer prescriptions. Local pharmacies like BJACH, Walgreens and CVS are options in our area, as well as the Express Scripts mail order option,” he said. “The use of hospital is not related to the opening season, but it is important that the recipients are aware of this big change and plan for it.”

Editor’s Note: TRICARE’s first annual open season was held in 2018, allowing beneficiaries to enroll in or change health plans without experiencing a TRICARE qualifying lifetime event (QLE). To make changes during open season, visit the recipient’s website at www.tricare.mil/bwe or go directly to https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/ and click on Manage Health Benefits .
