Today we will discuss how to update your information in the Defense Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) and how to qualify for dental benefits through the Active Duty Dental Program, TRICARE Dental Program, and TRICARE Pension Dental Program. We will evaluate foreign dental options. Finally, we will discuss the differences between medical and non-medical dental services and provide you with contact information if you have additional questions.

4 KEEP YOUR DEERS UPDATED When you and your family sign up for DEERS, be sure to keep your family members’ addresses and other contact information up to date. Keeping your DEERS information, especially your address, current is important to ensure continued TRICARE coverage for you and your family. Only sponsors can add family members to DEERS, but sponsors and family members age 18 or older can update contact information. The sponsor must update SOURCES whenever there is a change in marital status (marriage, birth, adoption, divorce, death, etc.). In case of any changes, update your information immediately, regardless of whether you are on the active page or not. You can update your DEERS information online, by phone, mail or fax. Active duty members, including National Guard members and reservists called or ordered to serve more than 30 consecutive days, are automatically eligible for TRICARE dental benefits. If you live or work within 50 miles of a military dental facility or DTF, you should seek help from a military dentist. To find a dental clinic, visit your main website or check with your ordering department. The Active Dental Program, or ADDP, provides civilian dental care to military personnel who cannot receive the care they need from military dental clinics. ADDP is available in the United States and U.S. territories (American Samoa, Comoros, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands). United Concordia Companies, Inc. If applicable, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are correctly coded as “remote” in DEERS. You must work with your department to make changes TODAY. Note: If you live or work within 50 miles of a military DTF and seek civilian dental care without being dispatched, you may be responsible for the entire bill. You’ll also need an appointment control number, or ACN, to book an appointment if you live far away. We will talk about ACN later.

To receive care through ADDP, you will need an ACN from United Concordia. If you are referred by a military dentist, that dentist must submit a request for referral approval to ACN. The number is valid only for the services listed in the forwarding confirmation; so be sure to get another referral if you need additional services. Remember, no matter where you live, personal dental care is not permitted unless provided by United Concordia, except for ACN dental emergencies. If you live in a remote area, you can fill out the appointment control number request form online to obtain an appointment control number. Forms are available on the ADDP website. There are three ways to make an appointment through ADDP when you have an ACN: If you have a military dentist, you can have them make an appointment for you. You can contact ADDP Dental Care Finder to schedule an appointment for you. Alternatively, you can make an appointment yourself. To schedule your appointment, specify your network dentist along with the appointment check number on the appointment request form. You should choose a network dentist who is a United Concordia contracted dentist to provide services at a negotiated price. You can find a list of network dentists on the ADDP website. Note: Active Reserve members who enroll early and live within 50 miles of DTF still have access to dental care from an ACN civilian dentist. No need to go to DTF first.

Beneficiaries can enroll in TRICARE Dental, or TDP, a voluntary, premium-based Department of Defense program. Benefits are administered by United Concordia. Program Eligible: Selected Responsible Family Members and Individually Trained Reserve Members and Their Families Temporary Surviving Family Members The program is available in the CONUS and OCONUS regions. The TDP CONUS service area covers the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The TDP OCONUS service area includes areas not included in the CONUS service area and managed services provided on board or on vessels outside CONUS service area waters. Order support is not required for OCONUS coverage, but costs are higher for OCONUS enrollees who do not receive order support.

Each month’s premium payment covers the following month’s dental care. There is a minimum enrollment period of 12 months for most beneficiaries. Exceptions include: Beneficiaries who are disenrolled, transferred to OCONUS or a controlled area with space at a National Guard military dental facility, and called or ordered to serve for more than 30 consecutive days.
