Today we’ll talk about what TRICARE is, how to find and determine your eligibility, and what medical services are available at different stages of your National Guard and Reserve career. We also provide some important information, including choosing a pharmacy and dental care. Finally, I’ll provide you with important contact information so you can get help and answer any additional questions you may have.

3 What is TRICARE? TRICARE is the same health care program for military personnel, National Guard and Reserve members, retired workers, family members, and qualified others. Note: Throughout this presentation, the term family members refers to dependents of service members who are TRICARE beneficiaries under federal law, bridges, and regulations. TRICARE integrates military health services such as military hospitals and clinics – a network of health care providers, public restrooms, schools, pharmacies and stores. TRICARE has no pre-existing exclusions, so you cannot be denied TRICARE coverage because you became ill before becoming a TRICARE beneficiary.

TRICARE is available worldwide and administered locally. There are three TRICARE regions in the United States – TRICARE West, TRICARE North, and TRICARE South – and one overseas region. Your benefits are the same regardless of the area you live in, but you will have different customer contact depending on the contractor’s area. TriWest Healthcare Alliance administers benefits in the West Region, Health Net Federal Services administers benefits in the North Region, and Humana Military Health Services administers benefits in the South Region. All three regional contractors work with the Army Health System to provide you with health, care and management services, including customer service, financial inquiries and access to certain health services. Customer service information for each region is provided at the end of this presentation. Although TRICARE programs and services are available overseas, and I provide contact information for you to learn more about TRICARE’s Overseas Program, we focus on regional parts of the state for special presentations.

The Department of Homeland Security, or DEERS, is a global database of military personnel and residents who qualify for military benefits, including TRICARE. Service members or sponsors must be registered with DEERS. However, sponsors must enroll family members in DEERS in order to receive TRICARE coverage. To enroll family members in DEERS, sponsors must visit an ID card provider service or submit information to the Defense Workforce Data Center. Relevant documents such as marriage certificates, divorce decrees, birth certificates and/or adoption papers must be available. Without a sponsor, an authorized person can add or remove family members from DEERS.

6 TRICARE Eligibility You can check your eligibility at any time through the website, military medical centers or MTFs, nurses, or by contacting the Customer Service Center for employment. Whenever a sponsor’s status in DEERS changes, family members enrolled in DEERS will also have their eligibility and status changed accordingly. Remember that child care centers are allowed to print military and ID cards to verify TRICARE eligibility.

Although only a sponsor can add or remove family members from DEERS, both sponsors and senior family members can update contact information. A sponsor must update DEERS when there is a family change, such as a marriage, birth, adoption, divorce, or death. Regardless of role, update your information immediately when there is a change. After you and your family register for a DEERS group, save addresses and other contact information for each family member. It is important to keep your DEERS information, especially your address, current to ensure TRICARE coverage is not at risk for you and your family. You can contact DEERS online, by phone, or by fax. For more information, go to the update your information online section of the milConnect website that appears on the screen. MilConnect is the Defense Manpower Data Center’s online portal that allows you to access your data in DEERS. For more information about milConnect, visit: To update your personal information, you can visit your ID card issuing service provider. Note: Newborns are covered by TRICARE Prime for the first 60 days if other family members are enrolled in TRICARE Prime. After 60 days, newborns not enrolled in DEERS are covered under TRICARE Standard and TRICARE Plus until their first birthday. On day 366, they are not eligible for TRICARE benefits. Adopted and adopted children, as well as children adopted by a court order, must be enrolled in DEERS to be eligible for TRICARE. Applications will be rejected until registered.

TRICARE offers many programs that provide continuity of coverage to National Guard and Reserve members and their families throughout their military careers. This chart shows the life cycle of TRICARE eligibility. Once you have been ordered for services, you and your family may be eligible for TRICARE services. These benefits continue once you start working for the role. We will discuss the first steps and explain them in more detail later in this presentation. Another brief discussion of failure and failure situations.

Sponsors who have been active for more than 30 consecutive days in support of emergency operations may receive 180 days of pre-qualification benefits. These results are based on order processing with a delayed good day; the sponsor’s HR department must update the member’s DEERS status to indicate eligibility. If your order is canceled before the date you notify us, your TRICARE coverage will end on the “good day” when the order is canceled. You can buy TRICARE Reserve Select. Or you may want to talk to your employer about getting your employer health plan back. Note: Remember that any TRICARE coverage you have will not be taken away from you after your advance notice or reinstatement decision.

Tricare Credentialing & Enrollment

If you are a member of the National Guard or Reserve and have extended orders for more than 30 consecutive days in emergency support, you may be eligible for advance benefits for your family. To avoid delays in service, check that DEERS indicates you are eligible for TRICARE. If possible, seek medical care daily at a military medical facility or MTF. If you live and work within 50 miles or one hour of an MTF, contact your local carrier for help locating a TRICARE agent. Remember that child care centers are allowed to print military and ID cards to verify TRICARE eligibility. Note: Emergency care is treatment needed for an illness or injury that, if not treated immediately, will not cause further disability or death, but must be followed up within 24 hours. All contingency maintenance must have a SPOC reviewed by the Defense Operations Center or Office of Military Support or MMSO. SPOC testing is also required for specialty care and patient care.

If you need special care, contact your MTF or TRICARE-authorized health care provider. Your doctor administers your specialty care license. Special care is often defined as treatment that a supervisor cannot provide. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. You do not need a referral or permit, but if accepted, contact your home or MMSO within 24 hours or the next business day. Enrollment in TRICARE Prime may be required at your last place of employment. Follow up after arrival
