Military Wallet partners with CardRatings for our credit card product coverage. Military Wallet and CardRatings may earn a commission from the card issuer. Some or all of the card offers that appear on Military Wallet come from advertisers. The fee may affect how and where card products appear, but will not affect the opinions or ratings of our editors. Military Wallet does not include all card companies or all available card offers.

In 2019, the Tricare Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) closed its doors and eligible military retirees and their family members were transferred to the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). The closure of TRDP has allowed the government to streamline operations while providing military retirees and their families with a greater number of dental services of choice. Of course, military retirees can also get dental or vision insurance through their civilian employer if it’s offered or if you pay for dental care directly.

With this change comes new registration rules – you will no longer be able to log in and out at any time. Changes to FEDVIP coverage are only permitted during the annual Federal Benefits Open Season each fall and if you have a FEDVIP life event that would require a change in coverage.

You will need to enroll in FEDVIP during the fall open season if you want dental insurance for next year. The 2022 Tricare Open Season will run from November 14, 2022 to December 13, 2022. During this time, you will select coverage during 2023.

FEDVIP has a wide variety of plans to choose from. Each plan has different costs and provides different benefits. So, you’ll need to read and think about which plan might be right for you.

If you are working after military retirement, you may be able to purchase a dental plan from your private employer that will cover some of your dental expenses. For those seeking dental insurance, you should carefully compare the costs and benefits of any employer-sponsored private plan with the costs of other options, including plans offered by FEDVIP. If your employer substantially subsidizes the purchase of dental insurance through work, this could be a great option for you instead of FEDVIP.

For most retirees, the two most difficult parts of the transition from TRDP to the FEDVIP program will be the new open season model and choosing between the many FEDVIP options.

Depending on your zip code, there are more than a dozen plans to choose from. Each plan has different premiums and has different coverages, deductibles, deductibles and plan maximums. For those transferring from a TRDP plan to a FEDVIP plan, it is important to note that some FEDVIP plans have waiting periods for orthodontics. However, some plans make exceptions for those transferring directly from TRDP.

FEDVIP offers a number of dental plans that you can choose from. While many plans are available nationally and even internationally, some plans are only available regionally or in certain zip codes. For a full overview and comparison of available options, visit the BeneFeds website. But here’s a quick overview:

MetLife offers two plans through the FEDVIP program with two benefit levels to meet the needs of military retirees transitioning from the TRDP program.

Additionally, the HIGH option includes 70% orthodontic coverage, with a whopping $5,000 in total pediatric orthodontic coverage and $3,000 in adult orthodontic coverage, plus no annual maximum.

There is no one right answer for everyone and everyone probably has several options that would work well for them. Most importantly, if you want FEDVIP dental insurance, you need to take action during the federal benefits open season.
