Problem: Military members and their families must use Tricare’s online patient portal to schedule appointments, fill prescriptions, notify physicians, and access medical records/test results. A website is very difficult to use with a poor design, which makes it difficult for users to use the main features of the portal. Many service members I have spoken with have given up on using the portal and instead choose to call a clinic or appointment line and face long waits.

Solution: The Tricare Online Patient Portal application is designed to provide service members and their families with an improved, convenient option for accessing/using health care. The target users of the TOPP application are military members and their senior members.

Military members and their families wanted a Tricare patient portal app where they could easily book appointments, request prescriptions, notify their care team and access lab results.

To start my research, I conducted a survey through Tally and had 7 military personnel and 2 adult dependents (spouses) participate. The purpose of the survey was to see how they currently interact with the Tricare portal, what their pain points are, and what features they want to include if an app is created. In addition to the following statistics, users also expressed their dissatisfaction with the current portal: difficulty connecting, slow loading times, and inability to use it on their mobile devices.

Because the audience for this project is so broad (all active duty personnel and their families), I tried to represent as many people as possible through two people. They were developed based on quantitative and qualitative data from my user interviews and surveys.

To deepen my empathy and better visualize the processes of users, I created two user journey maps.

Based on the data I collected, my research revealed that users have 4 main purposes for the app: planning, prescribing, messaging their care team, and getting lab results. With this in mind, I started creating a sitemap.

After my research phase, I began exploring page layouts through sketching – figuring out what I thought would serve users well and creating a predictable design pattern. Through Sketching, I decided to add a visual development panel to the appointment and prescription refill flows.

After designing a few screens, I decided on a basic layout and moved on to my low resolution designs. I used my low-res mockups to create a visual hierarchy, focusing on the features most requested by users.

After doing some usability research, I realized that I was overlooking a major pain point among users:

Along with the “hitting problem”, there were also accessibility issues for users with limited dexterity who might have trouble hitting smaller targets. Small circles can be a challenge for these users, so in addition to making the circles clickable, I also made the text clickable to make the target bigger and easier to hit later.

I wanted to make the visual design of the app as simple and concise as possible, helping users to easily access the main content. I made sure the text was large enough for visually impaired users to see without getting distracted and included a mix of icons linked to the text. I also made sure that the colors met WCAG contrast ratio accessibility standards. I went with a blue color scheme because many users believe that blue is associated with competence and reliability.
