Tricare Online Chart – Concept development mobile application UX research | Visual design Pigma | Adobe Photoshop Tali | Octopus.do | March 2023

Problem: Military members and their families must sign up for Tricare’s online patient portal, fill prescriptions, send them to their doctors, and access medical records/test results. The site is difficult to use with a poor design, which makes it difficult to use the main features of the portal. Most of the service workers I spoke with refused to use the portal, instead calling the clinic or making an appointment and faced a long wait.

Solution: The Tricare Online Patient Portal application is designed to provide service members and their families with a convenient and easy way to access/use the healthcare system. The target users of the TOPP program are members of the military and their dependent adults.

Military personnel and their families wanted an app for the Tricare patient portal that would allow them to schedule appointments, order medications, notify care staff and receive lab results.

To begin my research, I searched through Tally and found 7 active civil servants and 2 senior dependents (a pair). The purpose of the survey was to find out how they currently interact with the Tricare portal, what their concerns are, and what features they would like to see if a plan were created. In addition to the statistics below, users reported their biggest complaints with the current portal: difficulty logging in, slow load times, and lack of usability on their mobile devices.

Considering the general audience for this project (all active members and their families), I tried to represent as many people as possible using two people. They were developed based on quantitative and qualitative data from interviews and questionnaires with employers.

To help deepen my understanding and better visualize my user journey, I created two user journey maps.

Looking at the data we collected, it became clear that users had 4 main purposes for the app: making appointments, filling prescriptions, messaging the care team, and sharing feedback from the lab. With that in mind, I set about creating my sitemap.

After my research phase, I started researching the layout of the site, determining what would be best for the user and designing for an expected layout. Through the sketch I decided to attach a recipe and a visual flow chart.

After sketching a few screens, I decided on a basic layout and moved on to static design. I used low fidelity mocks to determine the level of visibility by focusing on users who really wanted it.

After studying the utility, it occurred to me that I was missing an important point among users:

In addition to the “anonymity issue” there were also concerns about accessibility for users with limited abilities, who may have difficulty with small characters. A small circle can be difficult for these users, so in addition to being able to click on the circle, you can also click on the text to enlarge the icon and then make it easier.

I wanted the app’s visual design to be simple and playable, helping users achieve great flow easily. I made sure that the text was large enough and that there was a collection of symbols to accompany the text so as not to distract visually impaired users. I also checked that the colors meet the WCAG contrast ratio accessibility standards. Given that most users associate blue with competence and confidence, I went with blue.

Compared to the conceptual design, if I had an actual project to work on, there would be several limitations that would affect the design of the app. Some may be limited: We are proud to offer services to US service members through TRICARE. As a TRICARE approved provider, we can offer direct payment to TRICARE Prime members. This means we can provide care and support to you and your family when referred by your primary care facility (MTF ) without paying the cost of treatment or claiming for repeat services.If you are a TRICARE Select/Plus member, you can request reimbursement for the services you received from us.
