Eligible members of the uniformed services are eligible for retirement benefits, including those age 65 and older. Retired National Guard/Reserve members irrespective of age. Eligible retirees are entitled to DRTP irrespective of age. This includes pensioners under the age of 60 (often referred to as ‘grey zone pensioners’). Unlike medical and pension benefits, you don’t have to wait until age 60 to enroll in dental insurance. Current spouses and children of retirees are also eligible. Children are eligible until the age of 21 or 23 if they are in full-time university education. Dependent children over the age of 23 are also eligible if assessed as unable to work. A good rule to remember is that DEERS tracks eligibility.
Unmarried spouses and eligible children of members who died after retirement or while in service. (DEERS) Surviving unmarried spouses and eligible children of retired or deceased partners are also eligible. The same age criteria mentioned above apply to these children. Although it is a general rule that the pensioner must register his family members for registration, these three cases, unless supported by documents, are exceptions: a. If the retiree is eligible for full and continuing dental care from the Department of Veterans Affairs; B. If the retiree is enrolled in a dental plan through another job, it is not available to family members; or c. If retiree is unable to avail benefits from TRDP due to present and ongoing medical or dental illness. Last but certainly not least, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and eligible family members can enroll in the TRDP.
