The House Naming Committee announced Thursday that it had narrowed down a list of potential new names for nine military bases, including Fort Bragg.

The post will no longer be known as Fort Bragg, named after General Braxton Bragg. Instead, the installation could be renamed Medal of Honor Recipient with a direct connection to Fort Bragg.

In a statement, the commission said it carefully considered the thousands of new names that could be proposed for places originally named in memory of the Confederacy.
“It is important that the names we propose for these installations appropriately reflect the courage, values and sacrifices of diverse men and women,” said the former Navy SEAL. Michelle Howard, Chair of the Naming Committee. “We also look at the local and regional significance of the names and their potential to inspire and motivate our members.”
“The Naming Commission plays an important role in recommending names that embody our American national and military values,” the commission says on its website. “Through extensive community engagement and thousands of direct submissions through our website, we’ve gained feedback and insights to ensure the best names are recommended for the national festival.”

As for Fort Bragg, there are 87 possible names on the list associated with the position. Among them are Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart, whose family was honored in a 1994 ceremony at the White House. President Bill Clinton awarded medals to military spouses.
Others included Robert Howard, who earned eight Purple Hearts for his actions during 58 months of combat. He was injured 14 times in total.
Among the potential names to rename Fort Bragg are Medal of Honor recipients Sgt. 1st Class William Bryant, Sgt. 1st Class William Joel; 82nd Division Major Generals Roscoe Robinson, James Gavin and Matthew Ridgway; and Capt. Kimberly Hampton, the military’s first female fighter pilot to die in combat on Jan. 2, 2004, in Iraq.
In September, the naming committee received input from Fayetteville residents about who they want Fort Bragg to be named after.

Congressman Richard Hudson, whose district included Fort Bragg, proposed that Fort Bragg be stripped of its affiliation with Confederate General Bragg and instead be renamed for Bragg’s Confederate cousin, Edward S. Bragg, as a compromise. Edward S. Bragg’s name is not on the list.
“After an upcoming meeting with the organization’s leaders, staff and their local employees to discuss the names, the committee will choose the final names,” the website says, to draft a joint naming plan submitted to the National Assembly by October 1. 2022.
The Defense Authorization Act of 2021 passed by Congress requires the renaming of Defense Department properties to commemorate individuals who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. All settings with the same name as Alliance will be renamed.
Retired Lt. Gen. Dan McNeil said it is now part of US law, passed in the National Defense Authorization Act a year ago. He said he shares his views on that.

“I don’t think it makes the most sense to rename a military base.” I get the story,” McNeil said. “I have no problem going the other way. I think I’m backing out of it until I know where it’s going. If this was a cookbook I wouldn’t want any part of it.’
Tommy Bolton, North Carolina’s civilian assistant marshal, said he thinks the committee has come up with a name to go with.
In addition to Fort Bragg, other military bases to be renamed include Fort Rucker, Alabama; Fort Polk, Louisiana; Fort Benning and Fort Gordon in Georgia; and Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Lee and Fort Pickett in Virginia, the statement said.
Camp Bragg – as Fort Bragg was originally called – was established in 1918 as an artillery installation and named after North Carolina native Braxton Bragg, an artillery officer who became famous for his role in the Battle of Buena Vista, Mexico in 1847. He later served as Maj. in the Confederacy and was implicated as a slave owner and a losing battle in the Civil War.
