Today we will discuss how to update your information in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, and how to get dental benefits through the Dental Tax Program, TRICARE Dental and the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program. We will review your dental options abroad. Finally, we will discuss the differences between medical and non-medical services and provide contact information if you have any additional questions.

Once you and your family are enrolled in DEERS, be sure to update addresses and other contact information for all family members. Keeping your DEERS information up-to-date, especially your address, is important to ensure uninterrupted TRICARE coverage for you and your family. Although only the sponsor can add family members to DEERS, both the sponsor and family members age 18 and older can update contact information. Every time there is a change in family status (marriage, birth, adoption, divorce, death, etc.), the sponsor must update DEERS. Active duty members, including National Guard and Reserve members who are called or ordered to work for more than 30 days on a pre-planned government mission or to support an emergency operation, automatically receive TRICARE dental benefits. If you live or work within 50 miles of a military dental installation or DTF, you should seek care from a military dentist. Visit their main website or check with your local dental clinic to find a dental clinic. The Active Duty Dental Program, or ADDP, provides civilian dental care to service members who cannot get the care they need from a military dental clinic. ADDP is available in the United States and US territories (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands). ADDP is managed by United Concordia Companies, Inc. (United Concordia), which is available to service members who: receive referrals from military DTFs or live and work more than 50 miles from a facility with a military DTF. It is your responsibility to ensure that it is correctly coded as “rural” in DEERS, if necessary. You must work with your department to make changes to DEERS. NOTE: If you live or work within 50 miles of a military DTF and seek civilian dental care without a referral, you may be responsible for the entire bill. To receive services through ADDP, you will need a United Concordia ACN. If the military dentist is referring to the ADDP, they must provide ACN with proof of your referral request. The number only applies to the service specified in the referral confirmation, so be sure to get another referral if you need additional services. Remember, no matter where you live, dental care in the private sector is not accredited until United Concordia issues an ACN. If you live far away, you can fill out the Appointment Control Number Request Form to get an appointment control number. The form is available on the ADDP website. Once you have an ACN, there are three ways to schedule an appointment through ADDP: If you have a military dentist, you can ask them to schedule an appointment for you. You can contact an ADDP Dental Care Finder to schedule your appointment. Or you can make an appointment yourself.
