Tricare’s medical page states that people under 65 who qualify for Medicare because of end-stage renal disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, mesothelioma or a qualifying disability can keep Tricare Prime at no cost. Contact your local Tricare provider for more information.

Note: Tricare for Life is an individual right, so if you are eligible for Tricare for Life but your spouse is not of legal age, under Tricare 2021, they can keep their original Tricare Prime or Tricare Choice benefits until they are eligible.

If you or your spouse have worked and paid income taxes for at least 10 years, you don’t have to pay for Medicare Part A coverage. If you don’t meet these requirements, the 2024 Part A rate for most people is $505 per month.

In 2024, a single filer earning $103,000,000 a year will pay a monthly B premium of $174.70. Prices increase from there depending on income and file size.

As a bonus, TriCare for Life usually pays for the remaining medical expenses after Medicare pays its share. But if you are hospitalized for more than 150 days or treated outside the US, Tricare for Life requires a deductible and co-pay, according to the Tricare for Life page. If you choose an out-of-network provider or opt for Medicare, you may incur a fee.

Note: According to the TriCare for Life website, VA providers may not bill Medicare, so if you receive care related to VA services, you may incur higher costs.

The amount you pay for deductibles and co-pays when you don’t have Medicare depends on several factors, which are explained in this TriCare 2022 Health Care Matrix. Tricare for Life’s stock price will remain unchanged through 2023, according to the Congressional Research Service.

TriCare and Medicare Parts A and B beneficiaries are automatically covered if your information in DEERS is updated.
