Historic racing cars, also known as speed races, use video game consoles that are similar to slot machines. However, they use a previously completed contest to determine the winners. Punters can choose a horse at random or use the race tables to select the top three. Last fall, a Kentucky judge ruled that the slots were legal because they fit the definition of pari-mutuel betting.

Kentucky currently has four acceleration centers with more than 2,700 vehicles. Kentucky Downs in Franklin, which straddles the Tennessee border in the south-central part of the state, and Ellis Park in Henderson opened in 2011. Louisville’s Derby City, owned by Churchill Downs, opened last September. Located in Lexington, Keeneland merged with the local Red Mile Railroad and opened in 2015.

“We’ve seen the tremendous impact that Derby City Gaming in Louisville has already had on the racing industry and the local community, and we look forward to similar success here in Christian County,” said Churchill Downs President Kevin Flanery.

Since its launch, Derby City Gaming has grown its team and generated approximately $407 million in wagers each month. Last month punters wagered more than $92.6 million on Derby City’s 900 cars. Keeneland’s 902 cars have paid more than $231.8 million since the start of the fiscal year in July. Kentucky imposes a 1.5 percent excise tax on the entire team. Keeneland earned $3.5 million this year, while Derby City earned $6.1 million. The state divides the tax revenue between the general fund and the funds of the horse industry.

Races and games are a major attraction in Oak Grove, a town of 7,500 on the border of Clarksville, Tenn. It is also close to Fort Campbell, home to more than 20,000 active duty soldiers and their families.

But the complex will include a hotel with 128 rooms and an amphitheater that can accommodate 3,000 rooms. It also has a 30-space recreational vehicle park and a 1,200-seat grandstand. R2Architects LLC, which designed River City Gaming for Churchill Downs, handled the design work for Oak Grove.

Churchill Downs and Keeneland are proven winners and have a reputation for enhancing the guest experience, so we know this project will be no different,” he said.

Churchill Downs and Keeneland first announced plans to develop the southwestern Kentucky site in September 2017. At the time, the partners revealed their plans for both projects. The other was the site of a straight, head-to-head race in Corbin. However, the project in Corbin, a city in southeastern Kentucky 25 miles from Tennessee, is currently on hold.
