How To Add A Dependent To Tricare

How To Add A Dependent To Tricare – Having a new baby is a busy and fun time! While you’re busy adjusting to your new life, it’s important to make sure you’ve entered your new baby into the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). DEERS is the first (or sometimes only) step in enrolling a new child in TRICARE. So how do you do it?

New children should be enrolled in DEERS as soon as possible. The easiest way to register a new child in DEERS is to go to a DEERS office with the certified birth certificate of the sponsor child. If you do not yet have a birth certificate, you can use a hospital certificate of live birth. If the child was born abroad, you will need the original Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

If the child’s parents are spouses of the service member, but are no longer in DERS for some reason, the sponsor will also need to bring a certified copy of the couple’s marriage certificate.

You do not need a social security number and card to enroll your child in DEERS. The DERS sheet can be updated after receiving the child’s social security number and card. When you receive your card, be sure to go to a DEERS office to update your registration.

If the child’s parents are not married and the father is the sponsor, additional documents are required. Check with your DEERS office for specific requirements.

If the parents are married and the non-military parent is enrolled in DEERS, the non-military parent may enroll the child in DEERS with a proper birth certificate/birth certificate and power of attorney.

If the parents are not married, the non-military parent may request assistance from the personnel office in facilitating the infant’s registration in DERS. However, non-military parents cannot register a child on their own, even with a power of attorney.

The next step is to make sure the child is enrolled in Tricare. This should be done automatically, but a) you want to check and b) you want to choose a different Tricare plan. There are two slightly different processes and timelines depending on whether you live in the United States or abroad.

If you live in a TRICARE Prime service area (PSA), your child will automatically be enrolled in Tricare Prime when enrolled in DEERS.

If you do not live in a PSA, your child will automatically be enrolled in Tricare Select when enrolled in DEERS. You have 90 days from your auto-enrollment date to change plans.

If the child is not enrolled in DEERS and TRICARE within 90 days, medical claims will be denied. Coverage will be backdated from birth when you enroll your child in the DEERS program. You will need to work with your health care providers and TRICARE provider to resubmit your claims.

The child will be automatically enrolled in Tricare Select. You have 90 days from the date of automatic enrollment to choose Tricare Overseas or Tricare Overseas Remote.

If the child is not enrolled in DEERS and TRICARE within 120 days of birth, medical claims will be denied. You may also be denied care in military treatment facilities. Coverage will be backdated from birth when you enroll your child in the DEERS program. You will need to work with your health care providers and TRICARE provider to resubmit your claims.

None of these steps are difficult in themselves, but sometimes everything is difficult when you have a new baby. Respect the 90-day period (120 days abroad).
