Fort Bliss Investigating Cases Of Unsterilized Dental Instruments Used On Patients

The Fort Bliss Dental Health Activity (DENTAC) held a change of command ceremony on Aug. 18 at Fort Bliss and the Old Ironsides Museum, where Col. Valerie Holmes ordered Col. Karen Keith.

Holmes, who assumed command of Fort Bliss DENTAC a year ago, will take over as director of the Clinical Performance Assurance Directorate (CPAD) at the US Medical Command.

“(Holmes) never took his eyes off the mission,” said Col. Michael Roberts, Commander, Dental Health Command Center. “He knows very well that every soldier is someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, brother or sister.”

During Holmes’ command, Fort Bliss Dental achieved an all-time high of 98.2 percent dental readiness and 60 percent dental recovery. A soldier is considered dentally healthy when he does not require dental treatment.

“He showed incredible consistent leadership. (The tooth rack) is especially difficult to achieve on a high-tempo (operational) FORSCOM installation,” Roberts said. “His professionalism and skill earned him not only the trust and confidence of his chain of command, but also the admiration of the leaders of the 1st Armored Division.”

Fort Bliss Dentec consists of five dental clinics in three states, including Fort Bliss, Texas, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

“Four hundred days ago we began a journey of reconciliation, restoration and rebirth,” said Holmes, who is from Los Angeles. “We have become one unit with one goal: to make sure we can provide quality care to our soldiers.” “This is one of the best orders, not because I’ve been here, but because of the talented providers of compassionate care. We are one, we have one goal and we have one team.”

A native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Keith most recently served as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) and Deputy Commander of the Dental Health Activity-Italy in Vicenza, Italy. Keith also serves as a WHO Consultant to the Surgeon General.

The Fort Bliss community is excited to have Keith take on this complex, commanding and sometimes overwhelming command, Roberts said. Keith is definitely a trooper.

“I am truly honored to be able to serve with (Fort Bliss Dentac Soldiers),” Keith said. “I am committed to leading our team to success and providing maximum support to the people we serve.
