If you take your last leave before retirement, you and your family will be covered by your current TRICARE program until retirement. If you are enrolled in TRICARE Prime, you will be considered part of your current unit until you retire. Active Duty Personnel, or ADSM, cannot replace their military hospitals, clinics, primary care managers, or PCMs. If you take leave and move: All care must be coordinated with your current PCM. If your new location is in the General Services Administration or PSA, your family members may move to a military hospital, civilian network hospital, or PCM in the new area before you retire. What To Do If You Missed Open Season

The Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, is a database of service members and dependents worldwide who are eligible for military benefits, including TRICARE. Sponsors may register DEERS family members in person with a single service identification or identification agency. To check eligibility and update information, log into the milConnect website at MilConnect, the Defense Personnel Information Center’s online portal that provides access to DEERS information. Information can be updated by phone, fax or by visiting a single identification authority. Appropriate documentation such as a marriage license, divorce decree, birth certificate and/or adoption papers are required to make the change. Note. A family member can only be added by the sponsor or an authorized person designated by the sponsor. Family members over 18 can update their contact information. Your retired military rights begin on your retirement date. Your spouse is also still eligible for TRICARE benefits. Surviving spouses and ex-spouses who have not remarried are also still eligible for TRICARE. Former spouses who have not remarried should contact the service personnel office to verify eligibility. Unmarried dependent children of retired military personnel, including stepchildren, are eligible for TRICARE benefits. Certain requirements must be met. A dependent parent or spouse is not eligible for TRICARE civil benefits; However, they may be eligible for space care at certain military hospitals and clinics.

For ADSM, you could not get TRICARE Standard or TRICARE Extra. But now that you’re retired, if you don’t re-enroll in TRICARE Prime or you retire and drop out of PSA, you’ll be eligible for these options from the first day you retire. These options offer the flexibility and freedom to choose your healthcare provider. There are no enrollment forms or fees, but outpatient services have annual deductibles and cost-sharing for most services. You can request help without a referral, but some services require prior approval. Check your local contractor’s website or contact them if you have questions about a specific service. With TRICARE Standard and TRICARE Extra, you can get help from a TRICARE-authorized provider: If you see an out-of-network provider, you are using the TRICARE Standard option and your costs will be higher. When you see a TRICARE network provider, you use the TRICARE Extra option and will pay less for covered services. TRICARE Extra is not available overseas. Benefits of seeing TRICARE network providers: TRICARE network providers hire regional contractors to provide care. Network providers agree to receive full TRICARE-approved payment for their services. Network providers also agree to process claims and other paperwork for TRICARE beneficiaries. Under TRICARE Standard and TRICARE Extra, you can receive care at a military hospital or hospital, depending on the facility. Note. An eligible provider that is not part of TRICARE’s civilian provider network may charge beneficiaries up to 15 percent more than the TRICARE-approved rate for services that use the TRICARE standard. The TRICARE Overseas Program, or TOP Standard, is available to retirees and their family members who live overseas. TOP Standard works just like the state’s standard TRICARE program. There is no need to enroll in TOP Standard and coverage is automatic as long as you demonstrate DEERS eligibility. You can get help from any service provider in the host country without referral; however, some services require prior authorization. The Affordable Care Act, or ACA, mandates that most Americans retain at least essential health care. The TRICARE program meets the minimum coverage requirements under the ACA. If you don’t have the required minimum coverage, you may have to pay premiums for each month you don’t have coverage. Payments will be collected annually with your federal tax return. For the 2015 tax year, you will receive an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1095 from the payment center that processes military, annuity, and pension payments. It will show your TRICARE coverage status for each month of 2015. If your military pay is administered by the Defense Finance and Accounting Office, or DFAS, you can receive your 2015 IRS tax form electronically through your DFAS myPay account.
