In 2019, the Tricare Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) closed its doors and military retirees and eligible customers were transferred to the Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). Closing the TRDP allowed the government to streamline operations while allowing retired military and their families to choose from a variety of dental care providers. Of course, military retirees can also get dental insurance or vision insurance through their civilian employer if it is offered or paid for directly for dental expenses.

With this change comes a new enrollment rule: you will no longer be able to enroll in the program ever again. Changes to FEDVIP coverage are only allowed during the annual federal benefits period open for each case, and if you have a FEDVIP-eligible life event that requires a change in coverage.

You must enroll in the FEDVIP program during the open period if you want dental coverage for the following year. The 2022 Tricare open period runs from November 14, 2022 through December 13, 2022. During this time, make selections for coverage in 2023.

New Dental And Vision Plans For 2019: Rates And More

FEDVIP has different policies to choose from. Each plan has different costs and offers different benefits. So you should read and think about which system is right for you.

If you are working after military retirement, you have the option of purchasing a dental plan with your private employer to cover a portion of your dental costs. For those who want dental insurance, you’ll want to carefully compare the costs and benefits of each private employer-sponsored plan with the costs of other options, including plans offered by FEDVIP. If your employer is heavily subsidizing the purchase of dental insurance through work, then FEDVIP may be an option for you.

For most retirees, the two hardest parts of switching from the TRDP to the FEDVIP program are the new OpenMi Season model and choosing from the many FEDVIP options.

Depending on your grandfather code, you may have more than a dozen designs to choose from. Each policy has a different premium and has different coverages, Japans, co-payments, policy maximums. Importantly for those transferring from the TRDP to the FEDVIP plan, some FEDVIP plans have orthodontic expectations. However, some policies make exceptions for those moving directly outside the TRDP.

Everything You Need To Know About The Tricare Dental Program

FEDVIP offers a variety of dental plans to choose from. While many plans are available nationally or even internationally, some plans are only available regionally or in certain zip codes. You can visit the BeneFeds website for a complete overview and comparison of the options available. But here is a quick overview:

MetLife offers two plans through the FEDVIP program, with two levels of benefits to meet the needs of those transitioning strategies from the TRDP account.

Additionally, the TOP option includes 70% orthodontic coverage, with an incredible $5,000 in pediatric orthodontic coverage and $3,000 in adult orthodontic coverage, with no additional annual maximum benefit.

The right answer is not the same for everyone, and probably everyone has several options that would be useful to them. Most importantly, you must act during the Federal Benefits Open Period if you want FEDVIP dental coverage.
