Affordable health care is a major concern for retirees, especially those who “age out” of most TriCare plans at age 65.

For TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries and their families, TRICARE for Life is a convenient continuing health care option that balances affordability and access to care.

Welcome Federal Employees

Until 2001, TRICARE stopped covering military retirees and their families at age 65, leaving them to rely solely on Medicare. Medicare is a United States government program that provides health care to Americans age 65 and older and Americans with disabilities.

Tricare for Life is a “Medicare-raparound” coverage in which Tricare is the second payer to cover post-treatment costs. Tricare for Life is available worldwide – even outside of the United States, where the drug is not available. For retirees living abroad, Tricare for Life is the primary health care payer.

Long-term care: This plan covers qualified nursing facilities, but not nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Apply for long-term care coverage through the federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program* or commercial coverage options.

* The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has suspended applications for coverage under the Federal Long Term Insurance Program (FLTCIP) effective December 19, 2022. The suspension will remain in effect for 24 months unless OPM issues another notice terminating or extending the suspension period.

When retirees and their dependents become eligible for Medicare at age 65, they are no longer eligible for TriCare Prime or TriCare Choice.

All eligible TRICARE beneficiaries with Medicare Parts A and B are eligible for TRICARE for life. There is no enrollment fee for Tricare for Life, but you must first enroll in Medicare and pay your Medicare Part B premium.

According to Tricare’s Medicare page, people under the age of 65 who qualify for Medicare because of end-stage renal disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, mesothelioma or a qualifying disability can continue to receive Tricare Prime without saving them. Contact your local TRICARE contractor for more information and options.

Note: Tricare for Life is an individual entitlement, so if you are eligible for Tricare for Life but your spouse is not yet an adult, they will receive original Tricare until 2021, according to the 2021 Tricare press release. Keep doing it. . or Tricare Choice benefits. ,

How Much Do I Owe? New To Tricare

According to the Medicare website, as long as you or your spouse have worked for at least 10 years and have paid payroll taxes, you do not have to pay for Medicare Part A coverage. If you don’t meet these requirements, the 2024 rate for most people is $505 per month for Part A.

In 2024, single filers earning less than $103,000 will pay a monthly Part B premium of $174.70. Rates depend on your income and application status.

As covered coverage, Tricare for Life usually pays medical bills after Medicare pays its share. But if you are hospitalized for more than 150 days or receive care outside the United States, you must pay a deductible and copayment to Tricare for Life, according to the Tricare for Life page. You may also pay these costs if you choose an out-of-network provider or one that chooses Medicare.

Note: According to the Tricare for Life website, VA providers cannot bill Medicare, so if you receive non-service-related care from a VA provider, you may incur significant costs.

A Tricare Supplement Insurance Plan Can Help Your Family Save On Medical Costs

The amount you will pay in deductibles and cost shares if Medicare coverage is not available depends on several factors explained in this 2022 TRICARE Cost of Living Matrix. TriCare’s cost-sharing plan will not change in 2023, according to the Congressional Research Service.

If your information in DEERS is updated, coverage is automatic for TRICARE beneficiaries with Medicare Parts A and B.

Medicare-eligible individuals must sign up for Medicare several months before their 65th birthday. Signing up for treatment right away will allow TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries to avoid any delays in TRICARE coverage.

You can get more information about when to sign up for Medicare and other questions about how it works with TRICARE in this brochure, Enrolling in TRICARE and Medicare.
