Fort Bliss Dental Health Activity (DENTAC) held a change of command ceremony with Col. Valerie Holmes relinquishes command to Col. Karen Keith at Fort Bliss and the Old Ironsides Museum, August 18.
Holmes, who assumed command of Fort Bliss DENTAC more than a year ago, will continue to serve as Deputy Clinical Performance Assurance Directorate (CPAD) in the U.S. Medical Command.
“(Holmes) never took his eyes off the mission,” said Col. Michael Roberts, commander of the Central Dental Health Command. “He knows very well that every soldier is someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, brother or sister.”
During Holmes’ command, Fort Bliss DENTAC achieved a dental readiness level of 98.2 percent and 60 percent dental health at all times. A soldier is considered to be in good dental health when he does not require dental treatment.

“He has shown really consistent leadership. (Dental health) is very difficult to achieve in a FORSCOM facility with a high (operational) tempo,” Roberts said. “His professionalism and efficiency earned him not only the trust of his chain of command, but also the praise of the leaders of the 1st Armored Division.”
Fort Bliss DENTAC consists of five dental clinics spread across three states, including Fort Bliss, Texas, White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
“Four hundred days ago we began the path of reconciliation, renewal and revival.” We became a unit with one purpose: to provide quality care to our Soldiers,” said Holmes, a native of Los Angeles. “This is one of the best directions, not because I’ve been here, but because of the skilled and compassionate care providers. “We are one, we have a purpose and we have a team.”
A native of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Keith most recently served as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) and Activity-Italy Deputy Commander for Dental Health in Vicenza, Italy. Keith also serves as an OMS consultant to Surgeons.

The Fort Bliss community is thrilled to have Keith take over this complex, impressive and sometimes very difficult command, Roberts said. Keith is definitely a trooper.
