Patients can expect a response within 24 hours, but many receive a response sooner. And the added benefit of using SMS is that, unlike phone calls, all messages are recorded and never deleted, so you is a permanent record of all conversations with the service provider as personal information.

I can access it from my phone, so if I’m not at home and I need to order a prescription, I can send an email and know it will be delivered to my pharmacy.

Many service providers I have spoken to have given up on using the portal and instead chose to call the clinic or make an appointment and have to wait a long time.

The decision. Tricare’s online patient portal application is designed to provide providers and their families with a seamless and convenient way to access and use healthcare services. The target users of the TOPP program are military personnel and their adult dependents.

Military personnel and their families needed a Tricare patient portal where they could easily schedule appointments, request prescriptions, message their care team and access lab results.

To start the research I conducted a survey of 7 active duty military personnel and 2 adult dependents (female) through Tally. The purpose of the survey was to find out how they currently interact with the Tricare portal, what challenges they have and when the app will be ready, what features they would like to see. In addition to the statistics below, users have also expressed some of their main frustrations with the current portal: difficulty logging in, slow loading, and not being able to use it on their mobile device.

Given that the audience for this project is quite broad (all military personnel and their families), I tried to represent as many people as possible through two people. They were developed based on quantitative and qualitative data from my interviews and user surveys.

To help me deepen my empathy and better visualize my users’ processes, I created two user journey maps.

Based on the data I collected, I found that users have four main tasks in the app: making appointments, filling prescriptions, communicating with the medical team, and getting lab results. With that in mind, I set about creating a sitemap.

After the research phase, I began exploring page layouts using thumbnails to determine what I thought would best serve users and create a predictable design pattern. With the thumbnails, I also decided to add a visual progress bar to the recipe and supplement the entries.

After drawing a few screens, I settled on the basic layout and moved on to my low-fidelity designs. I used my low-fidelity layouts to create a visual hierarchy, drawing users’ attention to the most requested features.

After doing a bunch of usability research, I noticed that I had forgotten one big problem among users:

In addition to the “non-targeting problem”, there were accessibility issues for users with limited dexterity who might have trouble hitting small targets. Small circles can be a problem for these users, so in addition to making the circles clickable, I also made the text so that the target is larger and therefore easier to hit.

I wanted the visual design of the app to be as simple and inclusive as possible, helping users easily understand the main flows. I made sure that the text was large enough for visually impaired people to see without distraction and added a combination of icons with the text. I also made sure the colors met the WCAG contrast ratio accessibility standards. I chose a blue color scheme because most users associate blue with competence and reliability.

If this was a project I was actually working on, rather than a conceptual design, there would probably be some constraints that could affect the design of the app. Some potential limitations: All recipients must prepare for the introduction of the new electronic health record – MHS GENESIS – for Blanchfield Military Hospital and Fort Campbell Health Services.
