Tricare Dental Benefits For Retirees – When the Tricare Retiree Dental Program ended in 2018, retirees were able to choose a dental insurance provider through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).
FEDVIP is a voluntary, pay-as-you-go insurance program. Sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and offers eligible participants options and schedule options among 12 dental insurance carriers.

All plans have different levels of coverage – most have high and low options. A larger option provides more coverage for a higher premium.

Dental HMO plans include predictable payments in advance. It is designed to be transparent to members and dentists alike, with specific fees listed for each covered service. If you know what kind of dental treatment you should have, you will know how much you will pay for your dental care before you go to the dentist.
PPO plans cover the procedure as part of the coinsurance, and it may not be clear what your out-of-pocket costs will be. For example, a major job like a crown can be covered at 50%. You need to know how much the dentist will pay you for the procedure according to your dental plan’s contract to determine the cost.
It helps you understand your specific dental needs so you can make an informed decision. FEDVIP offers Standard and Advanced Option programs. If you know you need major dental work, you may want to check out the High Option plan, which can pay more for major restorative procedures. If you just want to protect your teeth, the Standard Option plan may make sense.
Look for restrictions such as one year or a lifetime of orthodontics to make sure you don’t have to pay when the program limit is reached.
Tricare Orthodontic Coverage
When comparing FEDVIP programs, look for any wait times that may be a barrier to getting care quickly. For example, some programs have waiting periods for orthodontic work.
See if the dentist participates in a network program. If you are committed to a long-term dentist, you will want to verify that the dentist is in network.
You can start or change FEDVIP dental coverage during the open enrollment period, which usually runs from mid-November to mid-December each year.
