Outside of the TRICARE open period, beneficiaries can change plans only if they experience a qualifying life event. 1. Stick to your plan. If you want to continue using your current TRICARE health plan, you don’t need to do anything. You will continue with your current health plan until 2022 or as long as you qualify.
2. Sign up for the plan. If you are eligible for TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select but have not yet enrolled, you can enroll in a program now.
3. Change plans. If you are already enrolled in TRICARE Prime or Select options, you can change plans or change from individual to family enrollment.
According to health.mil, TRICARE Prime is a managed care option available in major U.S. service areas; beneficiaries are assigned a primary care manager who provides the majority of care. TRICARE Select is a preferred provider self-managed network plan. TRICARE Select is a fee-for-service option that allows patients to receive care from any TRICARE-authorized provider.

Retired military members and their families on Prime are eligible for the Select of TRICARE for Life vision and dental plan, according to health.mil. Only active family members are eligible for the vision plan.
In addition to the open season, Sylvest stressed that a change will take effect on Dec. 15 and Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacies will no longer be in the TRICARE network.
“Recipients who use them for prescriptions may want to start deciding where they want to transfer their prescriptions. In our area, options include local pharmacies such as BJACH, Walgreens and CVS, as well as Express Scripts mail order,” he said. “Pharmacy usage and Open season is irrelevant, but it’s also important for recipients to understand and start planning for this big change. “
