Now, how you use your online medical benefits with Tricare depends on two things: the type of Tricare plan you’re enrolled in and the type of Tricare provider you see. Let’s break it down to make the process as clear as possible.
Does Tricare Cover Home Health Care?
There are two terms you need to understand when it comes to using Tricare Benefits for online therapy: An in-network Tricare provider:
This term refers to an online counselor who does not work directly for Tricare but has an agreement with Tricare to continue working with beneficiaries.
You don’t need to worry too much about the details of these different types of therapists as the providers themselves know this information and can provide it to you. When you understand how Tricare benefits work to access online counseling, you should be aware of these two different types of providers.

If you are an Active Duty Service Member (ADSM), you must obtain a referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM) to see a therapist in order for your benefits to be covered by Tricare. Whether you see this counselor in person or use telemedicine, Tricare requires all ADSMs to receive a referral for medical services on a military base.
The only way to be referred to ADSM is to not use the Tricare benefit. This way you can see everyone without a referral, but you have to pay the provider for the sessions. If you use your Tricare benefit and get this referral, you won’t incur any costs to see an in-network therapist like ADSM.
If you are addicted to Tricare Prime, you do not need a referral to work with an online therapist. You can see a Tricare provider online right away without waiting for any type of authorization. There is no cost to go to an in-network provider for online therapy.
If you go to an out-of-network Tricare provider, you have two different ways to use your Tricare insurance to cover in-network therapy:

With Tricare Select, you don’t need a referral or permission to see an in-network therapist. You must first meet your annual deductible, and once you meet that deductible, you only have a small deductible for each session. As of this writing, the co-pay is $34, but be sure to check your benefits on the Tricare website.
Just like when you see an in-network provider, you still have to meet your annual deductible before Tricare will cover your online therapy sessions. Once you meet the deductible, you are responsible for 20% of the cost of your appointment. For example, if Tricare covers sessions for $100, you are responsible for 20% of that cost, or $20. So you pay $20 per session.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide psychiatric or medical services. Consult your Military Treatment Facility (MTF) for these.
Tricare Drug Rehab Coverage In Florida
We are proud to serve US service personnel and their families through TRICARE Prime. As a TRICARE-approved provider, direct billing means that your primary care facility (MTF) can provide care and support to you and your family without having to cover medical expenses or file retroactive claims. If you or your family would benefit from a comprehensive psychological evaluation, therapy, or psychological counseling, talk to your MTF about a referral to our Tokyo or Okinawa office or a telehealth referral. Currently, comprehensive psychological assessments are only available in our Tokyo office. Once we receive your MTF and TRICARE referral, our TRICARE Prime team will contact you via email.
