Do you feel like your time is holding you back from living your best life? Maybe you have very painful periods, debilitating PMS, or a disability that makes it difficult to cope with periods. Or maybe you just resent the irregularity of your monthly bleeding. =

However, you shouldn’t let your time hold you back. By using birth control to stop menstruation, it is possible to live a period-free life. Not to mention that doctors say this method is safe.

Things You Should Know If You’re Going To Stop Taking Birth Control Pills

These pills are usually packaged in 28-day packs that contain three weeks of hormones and then one week of pills without the active ingredient. When you take these placebo pills, you get a period — simulating the cycle that occurs when a person naturally ovulates, said Dr. Jonathan Schaffir, OB-GYN and professor of OB-GYN medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

But just because the pills are packaged that way doesn’t mean you should use them that way. Schaffir says that if you want to stop your period, you can skip the last line of pills and start a new pack right away to avoid hormonal disruptions. By keeping these hormones stable, you can prevent bleeding.

In addition, White said there are certain types of birth control pills that are designed for continuous dosing and have 84 active pills. After taking 84 pills, there is a week of placebo. White said you can take placebo pills and have your period once every three months, or skip the placebo pills and go right to the next 84-pack.

How Long Does It Takes For The Pill To Work?

There is also a pill that can be taken year-round without a break called Amethyst. This birth control regimen does not contain placebo pills.

NuvaRing is a contraceptive device that is inserted into the vagina. Like the combined pill, the ring contains estrogen and progestin, except that instead of being administered orally, the hormones enter your body through the walls of your vagina.

With the traditional NuvaRing, you insert it for three weeks before taking it out for a week, which acts like a placebo for birth control pills. However, if you want to skip your period with the ring, you can take it out after three weeks and insert a new one without a break.

The Annovera is a different, new type of ring that is worn once a year instead of once a month. This means that you don’t have to throw it away every month, you just have to take it out and clean it once a month. But White says there hasn’t been much research on using the ring to permanently skip periods, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about using it in this way.

Your Birth Control May Fail If You Have This Genetic Variant, Research Suggests

If you have an IUD, there’s a chance your period will stop, but it’s not guaranteed, Schaffir says. An IUD is a small device that your doctor inserts into your uterus. It contains levonorgestrel, a form of progesterone that acts locally on the inside of the uterus.

Depending on the specific type of IUD, it can be inserted and left in the uterus for three to seven years. The four types of hormonal IUDs are:

In this case, Mirena and Liletta have a higher dose of levonorgestrel, which means they are more likely to stop menstruating. If you choose one of these IUDs, you have a 20% chance of not having a period after one year of insertion, and a 30-50% chance of not having a period after two years of insertion. Kyleena has a 12% chance of not menstruating after one year and Sykla has a 6.25% chance after one year.

The Nexplanon contraceptive implant contains a type of progestin called etonogestrel and is placed under the skin of your arm, where it can stay for three years. Etonogestrel is stored in the implant and is released slowly and continuously during its insertion.

How To Delay Your Period With Birth Control Pills Tip

Schaffir says that people’s reactions to the implant vary, and while some people may stop menstruating, many experience irregular bleeding. It is estimated that one in three implanted women will stop menstruating after a year.

The birth control injection Depo-Provera is another form of progestin-only birth control that may or may not stop periods depending on the person, Schaffir said. A medical professional should inject once every 12 to 14 weeks to keep hormone levels stable and consistent.

After taking birth control pills for a year, you have a 50-75% chance of not having a period, and the longer you use the shot, the more likely you are to have a period.

Skipping your period with birth control is much safer, White says. In fact, the timing of birth control isn’t even the first “truth.”

Does The Pill Stop Your Period?

The use of hormonal contraceptives such as the pill often causes so-called withdrawal bleeding. White says your uterine bleeding is due to a sudden drop in hormones during the week of placebo pills.

If you continue to take birth control and the hormonal changes are corrected, you will not ovulate, the lining of the uterus will not regenerate, and therefore you will not bleed. “It’s not that the blood is ‘supporting’ your system or that you’re destined to have a mega period at some point,” says White.

Keep in mind that with either of these methods, it may take several months or longer for you to feel the end of your period as your body adjusts, says Schaffir. You may experience heavy bleeding or spotting, especially at first, but keep doing it for best results.

These changes in your cycle are reversible when you stop using birth control, and you can have regular periods in the future if you want.

How To Take Birth Control Pills: A Step By Step Guide

Stopping your period with birth control is generally considered safe. Methods of stopping menstruation include birth control pills, birth control rings, IUDs, birth control implants, and birth control shots.

Each method has its pros and cons, so discuss your options with your OB-GYN to decide which method is right for you.

But before you “cheat” and end your period with birth control, a practice that some women believe allows them to “combine” and control not only their social calendar, but also their careers, according to a recent episode.

If you take the pill, all you have to do is skip the line of sugar pills and start with the next pack. Other birth control methods, including the progesterone injection Depo-Provera and the progesterone-only pill, trick your body into thinking you don’t need to bleed every month.
