Most TRICARE beneficiaries who are eligible for Medicare and receive Medicare Part A must also have Medicare Part B to remain eligible. Part D is not required to maintain eligibility.

It’s important to understand this and be sure to sign up for Part B when you become eligible, or you may lose your right to TRICARE benefits if you don’t get them when you need them.

Another important note is that when you become eligible for Medicare, the age of your spouse and covered family members, as well as the TRICARE plan you each have, play a role in your coverage options. You can read more about this here on the TRICARE website under Family Members.

TRICARE For Life is comprehensive Medicare coverage for TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries with Medicare Parts A and B. Coverage is automatic if you have Part A and Part B and pay premiums on Part B. There is no cost to enroll in TRICARE For Life.

Tricare And Medicare

TRICARE For Life is available worldwide and does not require enrollment. Offers secondary coverage to Medicare in the United States and US territories. Elsewhere overseas, TRICARE For Life is the primary payer.

TRICARE For Life can work with Original Medicare (Parts A and B), a Medicare Advantage plan, or a Part D prescription drug plan.

However, you should think carefully about whether you need a Medicare drug. TRICARE For Life includes a rebate for prescription drugs, so you may not need Part D. If you have TRICARE For Life and decide to enroll in Part D, you can do so at any time. TRICARE drug benefits are considered “reliable coverage,” meaning they are at least as good as Medicare Part D. This allows you to enroll without paying a Part D late enrollment fee.

If you have TRICARE For Life and Medicare, you will not receive a TRICARE Wallet card. All you need is your Medicare plan card and military card to prove coverage.
