Unless you’ve experienced divorce firsthand, it’s hard to understand how painful it can be. Divorce brings up all kinds of emotions we never want to feel and breaks more hearts than we can count. So it is necessary to start now to prevent threats of divorce in marriages.

Although Christian marriages have a lower divorce rate than the general marriage demographic, the rate has increased over the years for churchgoers.

How To Stop Using The Divorce Word In Marriage.

So even though we are Christians who love God and are most likely faithfully married to our spouse knowing that God gave us that person, that does not exempt us from divorce.

It is not because of God. God does not want divorce to happen to any marriage that He has ordained. He talks really clearly and succinctly about how divorce is dealt with in the scriptures. That no one can separate what He has made one.

We as humans can encourage divorce. Threatening our spouse with divorce is certainly one way to do this.

Even if there is no infidelity or abusive behavior in the marriage that warrants a divorce, constantly threatening to separate your spouse can be devastating.

This can lead to rejection, fear, insecurity, mistrust, and many other things that can sometimes get in the way of marriage.

Usually, when a divorce is granted and blessed because of abuse (physical, mental, emotional, infidelity) in a marriage, there is nothing beautiful about it. While the choice of divorce may be healthy for a couple, it’s not always what they envisioned one day, and it only leads to heartbreak and spilled emotions.

Before I stop threatening divorce to my wife, you must first promise yourself not to say the word divorce.

I’m going to be completely honest here…I went through a period in my life where I didn’t understand how people got married without saying the word divorce.

“If everyone agrees that marriage is not easy and claims to struggle at one point or another, how come the word divorce never comes up when you discuss it with your spouse?

I honestly cannot fathom the fact that some marriages can actually defy the word divorce.

Well, at this point, I’m sure I said it at one point, I said it later, but deep down, when the anger of the argument is over, I always say the word divorce, and I was. always beautiful He sure did. Our frustrations surfaced and we let our emotions out on each other.

It was easy to say in the heat of the moment, before they hurt us or hurt us more, hoping to hurt someone else…

Can we be adults here and admit that many of us have had reasons where we want to say, “Yeah, he was acting like an idiot and I wanted him to understand.”

Can I Stop A Divorce That Has Already Been Started?

I may not sound like a “good Christian wife” right now, and I’m probably being a little too transparent here, but I really don’t like that I haven’t experienced marital conflict. I had prided myself on being a “good woman” for so long that I was actually more and more complicit in my mistakes. I felt like a failure. I don’t do that anymore, so here you get the real me.

Sometimes it hurts to go through what I have, but there are also experiences that I have learned to appreciate as growth. We can choose things as blessings or as things that hold us back.

I learned the hard way that the word divorce in this case actually speaks of life. Which leads to the death of marriage.

We should never say what we don’t mean because we are trying to defend ourselves in arguments or win back our spouse.

When It’s Ok To Stop Fighting In A Divorce

Now, how to stop your husband from using the word divorce… and how to respond to threats of divorce when you fight…

First, I went to my husband and fully shared my belief in using divorce as a threat. I told him about my vow to never say the word divorce again, and now it’s a promise to him.

Arguments will happen, your spouse may not be ordered to stop threatening you or him with divorce, but just as likely, due to old habits, they may leave out the word divorce or use words like “just go away.” If you are not….” Here you choose to keep your promise.

Whenever the threat of divorce is used in an argument, wait until the argument is resolved. Wait a day or two if necessary. When things are quiet, humbly go to your spouse and tell them that if that word was used, you are upset and hope they don’t use that word again.

How To Stop Your Divorce And Save Your Marriage

Pray that the Lord will remove this word from the marriage vocabulary. That if one of you ever uses that word again intentionally to hurt another person, then there will be conviction.

It might seem like really hard work when you feel like you’re a giver, to control your language, but love is unconditional, right? So it means giving for the good of the marriage, even if it’s hard.

Did you know that threats of divorce usually come as a defense mechanism to anticipate rejection? In fact, it leads to immediate rejection of the recipient. If we practice more gratitude in our marriage, we can help the healing process and build trust. Trust begins to build trust in our spouse, if you apologize for using the word, then soon we can trust that they won’t use that word again.

This is something you learn as you spend more time with God. Ask Him to increase your gift of distance. So you can know when and how to respond to your wife when you are in the midst of arguments and threats of divorce. Growing up, I learned to say it calmly. “My, I know we’re upset now, but I’d rather not say anything that might hurt us later. I hope you feel the same way.” It took practice. It took practice because it’s not always easy to respond calmly in the heat of the moment, but not using the D word and having the Holy Spirit be your language when you’re in trouble, is important to me to find ways. Not allowed in my marriage.

Stop A Divorce Once By I Stop A Divorce

I prefer that you have a marriage counselor that you can talk to directly because that will give you more comfort during difficult times in your marriage. But journaling or having a friend to listen and encourage you is also a good option. Journaling the emotions you feel when you use the word divorce will help release your pain. Holding on to feelings can lead to forgiveness in your marriage, and that’s definitely not what any of us want.

Don’t forget to account for minor argument changes. These are always things to be expected. It shows how much God does everything.

If you continue to feel discouraged, feel like you are not seeing change, or fear divorce, you should seek immediate counseling from your local medical office or church.

Don’t try to solve marriage problems yourself if you don’t have to. We have all experienced hardship. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
