HARRIS: It’s amazing how many people need it and how it’s increasing among people, how many people are being laid off and how insurance is decreasing.

The clinic accepts telephone appointments once a month. Harris said the spots fill up in about an hour and they have to turn away a large number of callers each time. The next tender date is July 16th.

Debbie Kratky of Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County said the agency receives many requests for affordable dental care from clients who want to look good during job interviews.

Kratky: We refer her to John Peter Smith and hope for the best, because honestly not everyone has affordable, free dental care. In fact, homeless people are more likely to receive some form of dental care than the average person making $25,000 per year.

Individuals seeking dental care at Tarrant County public hospitals must complete an assessment to determine whether they are eligible for reduced rates. One nonprofit provider says the “screening” takes two months, plus the wait for an appointment. JPS officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Calling 2-1-1 may lead to other resources. It is a government network that directs people waiting for affordable social and medical services to their communities.

In Tarrant County, calls to 2-1-1 for low-cost dental services have increased by more than 30% in the past year. Recommendations include JPS and Geisel-Morris Dental Clinic in Fort Worth.

Dallas County’s 2-1-1 suggests the same. Community Dental Care, a nonprofit organization, provides treatment to low-income patients at five Parkland Hospital clinics and five other locations.

You pay, but the cost is low or income-based. Finding affordable dental care for kids is easy. Under Medicaid or CHIP, parents pay little or nothing.

There is also another option: Baylor College of Dentistry – the only dental school in North Texas. Students require practical experience and participation in clinical trials to provide patients with a deeper understanding of treatment. Dr. Dean Hudson says he takes calls every Wednesday morning about exam appointments. There is a non-refundable screening fee of $57 and there is no guarantee that you will be selected as a patient. They say that patients must meet certain requirements.

HUDSON: You can afford this care. Pay when you go out. And they are able to understand the extra time the patient spends in the chair and the process our students need to learn.

Across North Texas, private foundations and faith-based organizations are recognizing the need and trying to fill the gap. At Cornerstone Assistance Network in Fort Worth, Mike Doyle is setting up a free dental clinic. It will be available to low-income people without insurance. He is raising money to buy another “chair” and the necessary dental equipment.

Doyle: We want to make sure we have processes in place, it’s a good environment. That’s why we want to make sure everything is in order before we open the doors because we know the news will spread very quickly.
