However, a new type of POP containing drospirenone, which must be taken at the same time every day for 24 hours, will soon be available in the UK.

Traditional POP prevents pregnancy by thickening the lining of the cervix to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Desogestrel and drospirenone POP can stop ovulation. If taken correctly, it is more than 99% effective. This means that 1 in 100 women will become pregnant within 1 year of using the Minipill as birth control. Under “normal use” (like many women use in real life) it’s about 92% effective.
Regular and desogestrel POPs are taken daily without interruption. Drospirenone POP (brand name Slynd) is available as a pack of colored tablets. One white (active) pill should be taken daily for 24 consecutive days, followed by one green (inactive) pill for the next 4 days before taking a new packet.³
