Tricare For Life Dental Care

Tricare Dental Plan (TDP) is a voluntary dental insurance program. The dental benefit is administered by United Concordia and is available to eligible active duty family members, eligible National Guard and Reserve members and their dependents. It is available in the continental United States (CONUS) and overseas (OCONUS).

Tricare Dental Premiums Increase For 2023 Plan Year

To be eligible to enroll in the TDP, your sponsor must have at least 12 months of outstanding obligations at the time of enrollment. Eligible family members include spouses and children under the age of 21 (or 23 if studying full-time). You register for a period of 12 months.

There are two costs associated with TDP: monthly premiums and cost sharing. Monthly premiums are based on sponsor status and the number of people covered by the plan (one person versus a family). Cost shares are based on the service provided, sponsor compensation level and location (CONUS/OCONUS) processed).

Premium is a “pay it forward” program. This means you pay this month’s premium to receive next month’s cover. If you are actively employed, you can set up an allowance to cover premiums. You can also set up a recurring payment from a checking account or credit/debit card.

If you do not pay your monthly premium, your cover will end and you will not be able to re-enroll for the next 12 months.

How Do Tricare And Medicare Work Together?

A co-payment is what you pay out of pocket for certain services. Your share of the cost is determined by your pay level and whether you are in CONUS or OCONUS. The following table reflects the cost sharing percentages.

The TDP contract year runs from 1 May to 30 April. The maximum annual payment is $1,500 per person per contract year, for non-orthodontic services. Payment for certain diagnostic and preventive services does not count toward the annual maximum.

There is a lifetime maximum of $1,750 per person for orthodontic treatment. If a member receives orthodontic services, payments for these services will not exceed $1,750 over their lifetime.

In the OCONUS service area, the State pays all charges that exceed the permitted charges up to and including the invoiced charges. This applies to all enlisted personnel except Selected Reserve and IRR family members and IRR members (except Special Mobilization Category).

To enroll in the Tricare dental program, visit the Tricare application page and register online. If you are OCONUS you cannot register online, see the instructions on the registration page for more information.

If there is a family plan in operation, children will be automatically enrolled on the first day before their first birthday. If the existing plan is for one family member only, the premium will increase from the individual plan rate to the family plan rate.
