TRICARE is a uniform health care program for active duty members, retired military, National Guard and Reserve members, Medal of Honor recipients, family members, survivors and eligible former spouses. TRICARE unites the health care resources of the military health system—such as military hospitals and clinics—with a network of civilian health professionals, institutions, pharmacies, and service providers to promote, protect, maintain, and restore the health of those under their care. protection. Care TRICARE offers several different health plans, dental programs and pharmacy benefits to eligible beneficiaries.
TRICARE is available worldwide. There are three TRICARE regions in the United States—TRICARE North, TRICARE South, and TRICARE West—and an overseas region with three regions—TRICARE Eurasia-Africa, TRICARE Latin America and Canada, and TRICARE Pacific. Your TRICARE benefits are the same no matter where you live, but there are different customer service contacts for each location. TRICARE works with regional civilian contractors to administer TRICARE health benefits in four regions. Health Net Federal Services, LLC administers benefits in the northern region; Humana Military administers benefits in the southern region; and UnitedHealthcare Military & Veterans administers benefits in the western region. International SOS Government Services, Inc. manages overseas profits. Your local contractor is your primary source for information and assistance regarding your TRICARE benefits. Each local contractor maintains a website and a toll-free customer service call center to help you with your questions and concerns about matters such as eligibility, referrals and pre-approvals, claims, complaints and fraud. Separate contractors administer TRICARE dental and pharmacy benefits. You can also visit for more information. Visit for more information on foreign profits.
Because the TRICARE website is a public information only website – open to anyone with Internet access – all registration and actions that require access to your personal information are done through TRICARE’s secure partner websites. These sites require secure records and are maintained by the Department of Defense or the Department of Defense and the medical, dental, and pharmaceutical contractors who administer TRICARE benefits. Let’s look at one of the most important steps you need to take – registration or change of registration. Start by selecting “Sign up or buy a plan” from the “I want to…” menu.
After you make your choice, you can choose from the various TRICARE program options that are right for you or your family. Here, we’ll explore how to enroll in a program like TRICARE Prime, which is required for active duty service members and available to others who meet the requirements. 10
Before starting the TRICARE Prime enrollment process, first determine if you live in a Prime Service Area, or PSA, by checking your zip code. A PSA is a geographic area, usually near a military hospital or clinic, where TRICARE Prime is offered. If you live in PSA, select PCM. Your PCM may be at a military hospital or clinic or at a civilian TRICARE network provider within the PSA if a military PCM is not available. If you do not live in a PSA, select Plan Finder to learn more about your TRICARE program options.

There are three ways to enroll in TRICARE Prime: Online: Because your service personnel office, not TRICARE, determines your eligibility for TRICARE, online enrollment in TRICARE Prime occurs through a DoD website called Beneficiary Web Enrollment, or BWE . The BWE website securely links your personal information to the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS, which is a database of service members and dependents worldwide who are eligible for military benefits. To register with BWE, you must have a CAC, DFAS myPay PIN or DS logo. We will discuss this input method later in this review. Phone: Call your regional contractor. Email: Download the TRICARE Primary Care Change (PCM) Enrollment Opt-Out form, which is DD Form 2876, and mail the form to your local contractor.
The accessible BWE website is a secure website that allows TRICARE beneficiaries in the United States to enroll in or opt out of TRICARE Prime Options or TRICARE Young Adult and to select or change PCMs, as well as to enroll in TRICARE Dental Options. Users can also use BWE to update their contact information in DEERS. It is important to remember that before you can find anything in BWE, you need to log in. If you need a demo to use this site, select “BWE Demo” at the bottom of the home page.
To access the many secure self-service options available on BWE, you must sign in with: a DS logo, which all couples and other users aged 18 and over receive; CAC, which has all DoD military personnel and civilians; or DFAS myPay PIN, which provides access to your payment information and can be used if you do not have a CAC A DS logo is especially important if you have family members who need access to their personal health information and important TRICARE communications. On the registration page, log in with your DS Logon, CAC or DFAS myPay PIN. If you need help, select “Help Center” at the top of the BWE login page.
This slide shows the login options available by target category. Service members can use any of three options, including CAC, DFAS myPay PIN or DS Logon. Retired service members can generally use a DFAS myPay PIN or DS logo. Other eligible family members, including spouses, surviving spouses, and children 18 and older, usually need a DS logo to access it. DS Logon provides access to service members, retired service members and other eligible family members. Note: The US Coast Guard, US Public Health Service commissioned forces, and members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are not paid through DFAS and do not have DFAS myPay PINs.
