Some of them, such as vitamin and mineral deficiencies, can be treated. But little is known about other causes of fatigue.

One cause of debilitating fatigue is a serious condition called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). ME/CFS causes prolonged, severe fatigue with flu-like symptoms (called post-exercise sickness). People with ME/CFS may also experience trouble sleeping, pain, or “brain fog.” Brain fog is when you have trouble thinking or concentrating. Physical or mental activity can make ME/CFS symptoms worse.

Researchers have yet to find an effective way to diagnose or treat ME/CFS. However, its symptoms are similar to those observed in people who have been sick with covid for a long time. Chronic COVID occurs when symptoms of COVID-19 appear weeks or months after infection. Experts estimate that about 20% of people with long-term covid will be diagnosed with ME/CFS.

These similarities create new opportunities for scientists to unravel the biology behind fatigue. That’s why NIH is bringing together researchers from different fields and providing new funding to help scientists unravel the mysteries of this and other types of fatigue.

“The Long Covid study sheds light on many issues that the ME/CFS community has been researching for years,” says Whitmore. “I think this research will help us better understand fatigue and get to the underlying mechanisms.”
