Delta Dental For Military Retirees

Delta Dental For Military Retirees – When the TriCare Retiree Dental Program ends in 2018, retirees will have the right to choose a dental insurance provider through the Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).

FEDVIP is a voluntary, co-pay insurance program. Offered by the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the plan gives eligible participants a choice of plans and a choice among 12 dental insurance companies.

All plans have different levels of coverage — most have high and low options. Higher options provide wider coverage at higher premiums.

HMO dental plans include pre-determined premiums. They are designed to be transparent to members and dentists and list specific costs for each covered service. If you know what dental procedures you need to complete, you will know how much dental care will cost before you go to the dentist.

PPO policies cover things like insurance percentages, and it may not be clear what your out-of-pocket costs will be. For example, major services such as crowns may be covered at 50%. To determine your costs you need to determine how much your dentist will charge for the procedure as per the contract with a dental plan.

Understanding your specific dental needs will help you make the right decision. FEDVIP offers standard and premium plans. If you know you will need major dental work, you may want to look into premium option plans that cover more costs for major restorative procedures. If you only need preventive dental care, the standard option plan may make more sense.

Look for limits such as annual maximums or lifetime maximums for orthodontics to ensure you don’t have to pay once the plan limit is reached.

When comparing FEDVIP plans, look for wait times that can hinder access to immediate care. For example, some plans have waiting periods for orthodontic work.

Check to see if your dentist participates in the plan’s network. If you have long-term loyalty to your dentist, you need to make sure your dentist is online.

You can start or change FEDVIP dental treatment only during Open Enrollment, which usually runs from mid-November to mid-December each year.

If you have a “qualified life plan,” you can start, end, or change your coverage at any time:
