What Is The Correct Temperature Of Cooked Chicken?
When did you get a meat thermometer? Have you checked to make sure this is true? It’s a good idea to check your thermometer once a year – and correct it if needed!
As you can see from the table above, different meats have different cooking temperatures. This temperature is the indoor temperature recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This temperature is the minimum temperature at which meat should be cooked to ensure it is edible.
If you cook chicken to 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius), it will be cooked through. But if you cook chicken breast at just 145 degrees Fahrenheit (63 degrees Fahrenheit), it will definitely cook. Therefore, it is important to know temperatures and use a thermometer when learning to cook at home. Considering there’s always the possibility of tender chicken breasts or tough thighs (not to mention food poisoning), this can seem overwhelming to newbies. The easiest way to solve these problems is to know the internal temperature of cooking a whole chicken.
For white meat, you want the internal temperature to be 165 degrees Fahrenheit, while for dark meat, it should be 175 degrees Fahrenheit. First, you need an instant-read thermometer, which is an essential kitchen tool. Not only will a thermometer help you achieve the final consistency of your chicken gravy, but it will also prevent you from eating anything that’s undercooked and contains harmful bacteria.
Basic Roast Chicken Recipe
There is a little trick when measuring temperature. If you’re cooking a whole bird, check for white and brown meat by inserting a thermometer into the thickest parts of the breast and thighs. When cooking a single breast, insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the breast. For thighs, wings, and drumsticks, yes – insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the meat, but not touching the bone.
Again, you’re aiming for 165 degrees Fahrenheit, but remember that the chicken will continue to cook once you remove it from the heat. For the best chicken breasts, remove the pan from 160-162 degrees, the chicken will continue to cook a few more degrees after taking it off the heat.
We want to use the same technique here: Since you want the internal temperature to reach 175 degrees Fahrenheit, you can remove the chicken from the heat when it reaches 170-172 degrees.
Throwing a whole bird in the oven can be a little intimidating when you’re new to the oven! But it’s actually easier than you think. Armed with an instant-read thermometer and your newfound knowledge of chicken temperatures, you’ll be eating juicy, tender chicken in no time (well, about an hour and a half). We recommend following this recipe, but typically you’ll want to cook the chicken at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour until the meat is layered on top.
